Histórica Plaza de Toros Real de San Carlos, Colonia Del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Bullring
This colossal building, located in Real de San Carlos, 5 km from the Historic District, in addition to being beautiful, has great historical value for the city. It was inaugurated on January 9, 1910 by an Argentine businessman Nicolás Mihanovich who dreamed of turning Colonia into a regional entertainment center by building a large complex with a Hippodrome, Bullring, Frontón and Casino. Paradoxically, bullfighting was prohibited by official resolution in 1912, by President José Batlle y Ordoñez, and the place has been abandoned ever since. Access to the Plaza de Toros is not open to tourists due to the risk of collapse, but it is really worth going to see its unique façade. Due to its interesting history, it is one of the most visited sites in the city, a century after its closure.

Manuel Lobo, Colonia del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Gate of the Citadel
Also called “Gate of the Field”, it was inaugurated in 1745 and faces Plaza 1811. It represents another of the most characteristic postcards of the department. The large stones in gray tones of the Fortress help to contextualize the visitor in the colonial era. The door is supported on both sides by the remains of what was the imposing wall that led the armed struggle between the Portuguese and Spanish in the founding years of Colonia del Sacramento.

Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento, Colonia del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Basilica of the Holy Sacrament
The two bell towers of the Matriz Church, crown any postcard of the Historic District of Colonia.
Located in front of the founding Plaza de Armas, the original Iglesia Matriz de Colonia del Sacramento (from 1680) was the first temple to be built in Uruguay, although it was then completely rebuilt on two occasions.
The current Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament, dating from 1810, preserves several elements of its origin, maintaining the simple lines of its Portuguese architecture.

Acuario Colonia Del Sacramento, Virrey Ceballos, Colonia del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Cologne Aquarium
The Cologne Aquarium is a different proposal in the heart of the Historic District, ideal for entertaining the whole family. It is the first aquarium of native fish in Uruguay. In a fun educational tour, various species of fresh and salt water fish that inhabit our territory are shown. The fish tanks are built in an artificial grotto with openings, achieving a very original circuit that captivates young and old. Fish are not only seen, but can also be heard through a novel headphone system.
Behind the grotto, there is another aquarium where the fish are fed and the quality of the water is constantly controlled, to keep the animals in the best conditions. The educational activities are completed with an Interactive Center where information about the aquatic flora and fauna of Uruguay is offered through different audiovisual media. It is possible to consult other materials (brochures, books, official files) in the basement. Before ending the visit, you can stop by the Aquarium shop and buy a souvenir.

Calle de los Suspiros, Colonia del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Street of Sighs
It is the most emblematic pedestrian in the historic neighborhood. Its Portuguese mansions dating from the 18th century, its colonial lanterns, its old cobblestones and its view of the Río de la Plata, make it a dream place, stopped in time. There are several legends about the magic that is breathed there. The most popular account of the city's brothels staying on that street. After their long journeys, the sailors eager for fun took refuge and took refuge among its cobblestones. These soldiers congratulated the women who lived on the street and sighed over and over again for them every time they saw them pass by. Some historical references indicate that prisoners sentenced to death were taken down that street and drowned when the tide rose or shot at the riverbank. It is a walk that undoubtedly deserves a small place on the agenda of any visitor; a must for those who want to feel the magical fusion of history, urbanism and nature. A place to take your camera in your hand and start shooting. It is a throwback in time that generates many new sighs.

Plaza Mayor, Colonia Del Sacramento Colonia Department, Uruguay
Main Square
One of the must-see destinations when visiting the historic neighborhood of the city of Colonia del Sacramento is undoubtedly the Plaza Mayor. This square was born with the foundation of this city and was the largest open space that existed. It was used since its inception to plan military maneuvers, as well as ceremonies that were held there as well. During the Great War this square was also used to shoot the prisoners captured in the attacks on these lands. Although the square is kept in great condition, some modifications were made to it, such as a passage to be able to go through it that changed the previous vision but that offers the possibility of going through it without damaging it. Around the Plaza Mayor there are a large number of gastronomic services where you can stop for a drink or taste a dish of international cuisine from the different restaurants that are located there. At night, the square lights up and the surrounding pubs attract people with music to have a good time and enjoy a very special night in Colonia del Sacramento.
